Diesel Electric Locomotives

Ok, so the other day I learned that modern diesel locomotives do not use their massive 16 cylinder engines to directly move the wheels. The diesel engine generates electricity which is then supplied to several big electric motors by every wheel (axle really).

Nathan, I apologize for my ignorance as I'm sure you new this all by the age of five.

Anyway, I thought that was really interesting. One of those trains can carry 1 ton of freight ~250 miles on 1 gallon of gas. A big semitruck can only carry the same ton of freight ~50 miles. Don't worry Nathan, that is not something I just learned.

It's been that way since the 1950's. Glad you're on board.
